Notes for RICHARD THOMAS STOCKTON:

This article appeared in the Arkansas Methodist May 29, 1897.

His companionship was calculated to make a man better. His conversation was always of something practical and elevating. His mind dwelt much on things the future and his end was that of a quite and unassuming Christian soldier, laying aside his armor for a crown. He was as devoted a steward in his church, as we ever knew. He was as charitable a Mason as we have ever met. He was a true and devoted a friend as could be found anywhere. His life was one of earnest solicitude for the welfare of his children and friends. His death is realized as a personal loss by the editor and all connected with the Highlight. Grant County has lost one of her best citizens. The Methodist Church one of her steadfast friends and supporters. The Masonic fraternity one of is zealous and charitable members. His family a father who's every heart throbs was a prayer for their good in life to come. Farewell, friend and brother.   We clip the above from the Sheridan Headlight, edited by Brother J. S. Williams, who had known Brother Stockton for many years.

Brother Stockton was born September 11, 1836.  Moved to Arkansas in the fifties and settled in what is now Grant County.  He formerly belonged to the Baptist Church, but joined the Methodist Church under the pastorate of Rev. C. Pope, in 1859.  He was married to Miss M. L. Isaacs September 5, 1860, with whom he lived happily until she preceded him to the heavenly home a few years before his death.

On March 23, 1897, he laid aside his armor, which had been kept bright by the work he wrought in trying to promote the cause he had espoused in the days of his vigor and manhood of youth.  He was regarded as the pillar of New Hope Church, near Sheridan, where he had held his membership - serving as steward a good portion of the time - for nearly forty years.  He leaves 8 children, six sons and two daughters.  May his noble mantle fall upon his sons.                                                                  O. H. Keadle,    Stockton R

(A must for those researching these family trees)

Richard T. Stockton stood 6 ft. tall, had blue eyes, brown hair, and had a fair complexion. He must have been one of many young southern men who represented the best the South had to offer.

Richard fought in several battles during the Civil war.  Port Hudson was one on them and proved to be of critical importance to the confederate defense of the Mississippi River.  The fortifications built there by the confederate army were strategically located on high bluffs overlooking a sharp bend in the river. Any union naval gunboat was in clear view and had to slow down when making a turn at this point in the river.  Because of its ideal location it could be easily be defended by confederate guns.

The siege of Port Hudson began on May 23, 1863. A vastly outnumbered force of determined southern defenders was pitted against 30,000 union soldiers. What began on that day was a siege that was to last for 48 days. This was the longest siege in United States military history. Ferocious assaults were thrown against the 6,800 brave defenders during the siege. These actions constituted some of the most severe and bloodiest fighting of the entire civil war. The siege took a heavy toll on both union, and confederate forces. Estimated casualties on the union side were over 5,000 men.  The confederate forces suffered greatly also. Towards the end of the siege, the confederate army had exhausted their ammunition.  They had to resort to eating mules, horses, and rats to keep from starving.

On July 7, preparations were made for the final assault by General Banks the commander of the union forces.  A storming party of a thousand union volunteers was organized to breach the battered fort defenses.  Heavily charged mines were put in place at the siege works, which would signal the final doom for the exhausted defenders.  Fortunately for those brave men both north and south, a note was dispatched to General Banks informing him that General Grant had taken Vicksburg.

As the good news spread throughout the trenches, I can hear the jubilant shouts of the union army poised for the final attack.  A note was quickly dispatched to the confederate works.  I can hear the shout by a Johnny Reb saying; "That's just another damned Yankee lie". But the Rebels must have known because, the forest echoed with the strains of the star spangled banner from a long silence band.  As the firing died away, silence fell upon both lines north and south.  The next morning at 2:00 the long awaited gray envelope came from the commander of the besieged defenders, admitting surrender.

The following is a quote from the book, Battles And Leader Of The Civil War, "But, stout as the defense had been, the besiegers had on their part displayed some of the highest qualities of the soldier; among these valor in attack, patient endurance of privation, suffering, and incredible toil, and perseverance under discouragement.  And to the defenders and besiegers it is alike unjust to say, even though it has been said by the highest authority, that Port Hudson surrendered only because Vicksburg had fallen.  The simple truth was Port Hudson surrendered because its hour had come. The Garrison is literally starving."

On the July 8, a long train of supplies was dispatched to the famished garrison. Final preparations were made for the surrender. On July the ninth, the union army marched into the fortress with colors flying and bands playing.  The confederate stacked their arms, and hauled down their flag, and in its place flew the Stars and Stripes. By order of General Banks, General Garners' sword was returned to him in the presence of his men in recognition of a heroic defense.

Richard T Stockton was paroled and signed The Oath of Allegiances December 31, 1863, after the fall of Port Hudson and made his way back to Saline County.  On his way back he must have thought about the events that took place during the siege.  He must not have been alone in his journey back, because his brother-in-law James Maguire was also insisted in the Arkansas 18th Arkansas Infantry, and assigned to the Garrison at Port Hudson.  Both men knew that the Vicksburg had fallen to Grant and the south had suffered a devastating defeat at Gettysburg. This was the turning point in the war and I'm sure that both realize this as they walk together.

I don't know what time of day it was when he finally could see his house in the distance. I can almost hear the dogs barking and yipping, signaling to the family inside that their long awaited master was finally home.

Notes for SARAH JANE HAMILTON:

Joseph Hamilton was the father of Sarah Jane Hamilto. The following article was taking from Goodspeed's History of Grant County, Arkansas.

Joseph Hamilton by well directed efforts and energy has come to be well and favorably known to the citizens of Grant County.  He first saw the light of day in Marion County, Tennessee, October 19, 1843, as the son of William and Sarah Fower Hicks of Tennessee origin.  The father was born January 8, 1807, and died November 6, 1876.  His wife was born May 4, 1808 and died August 1, 1887.  They were married in their native state, there made their home until 1857, and came to Arkansas, located in what was Saline County now Grant County, in the neighborhood of where their son Joseph lives.  William Hamilton was a wagon maker and a farmer, and together with his wife, was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for nearly half a century.  His wife was the widow of E. M. Hicks deceased.  There was born to the marriage of William Hamilton and Sarah Hicks, a family of five children, Joseph being the oldest. Four of the children are living Joseph, Sarah-wife of W. T. Stockton, farmer of Grant County. Emly wife of Asa A. Billingslea of Grant County and Cynthia, wife of A. B. Chiders, former of Grant County : Nancy K. wife of Henry Paxton, of Grant County , died when 30 years old.  Joseph Hamilton received his education in Tennessee, and on July 11, 1861 enlisted in Co. F.  11th Arkansas Infantry, Confederate Army.  He was taken prisoner below New Madrid., Missouri, and then carried north and continued to Camp Douglas , Chicago .  After and incarceration of only 10 days, he and his half-brother, E. M. Hicks made their escape by crawling through a hole in the wall of the barracks.  Their monetary position amounted to a 1.25 and they were 1000 miles from home, among enemies.   Plainly perceiving that their only hope in reaching home was by walking, they set out; but having braving all sorts of dangers and suffering privation and privation, at the close of the 36th day on the road.  They reached home, footsore lame and weary.  Resting but briefly at their homes, they again join their commands at port Hudson.  On June 3 at Clinton Louisiana, Mr. Hamilton was once more taken prisoner, soon being pardoned and returned home, where he remained.  He took part in the battles of Island Number 10, Port Hudson and other places along the Mississippi River.  After recovering from the effects of the war he made an extended trip to Texas, on horseback, trading in stock.  In 1870 he located on the place where E. M. Hicks began to farm, and has never followed farming and stock raising and trading.  The war wiped away all his property, but he continued industry and able management, he has been very successful.  In 1878 he moved to the place on which he now lives he was married in 1873, to Sally Wylie, daughter of David J. Wylie.  She was born in Gordon County, Georgia on March 1, 1855 by this union were seven sure all living. Cynthia L., Joseph W. His helpful information proved to be true, for without his help I wouldn't have had a starting place to look.
